Discover why it’s crucial that all children in our society are well prepared for the future.

There is no more important contribution to our nation’s future than a prepared, educated and engaged citizenry. Currently our public education is failing our children. Excellent solutions to the education challenges exist. We know how to help all children learn and succeed: research has shown that to be successful, the public education system must offer quality pre-kindergarten education, small schools that have high expectations and rigorous curricula aligned with both state standards and the workplace, and good teachers who are well supported by principals and district leadership.

Yet, we also know that two-thirds of all children are being left behind – a third of all children do not graduate from high school at all, and half of those students who do graduate are not prepared for college, meaningful employment or to participate fully in society. The future of the nation and these children is at risk. What we need is a determined, long-term commitment to improve public education for all children.

We have moved toward a knowledge-based economy. Our public school system must provide young people from all backgrounds and circumstances with the knowledge and skills necessary to become full participants in this changing economy. Otherwise, the gap that confronts our society between those with access to good education and those without will continue to expand and will threaten our economic future, our democracy, and our society.

As a nation, the American people care about educating our children and believe that it is one of the most important functions of government. We must demand real leadership that transforms public policy.

Parents, students, and community members raise their voices

Many organizations develop innovative educational programs, conduct best practice research, and train educators and parents to support student success. But a fundamental gap inhibits widespread adoption of these efforts. EVI fills that gap, using advocacy to transform other organizations’ good work into systemic change. Using civic participation and public information campaigns, we build public demand for excellent education and channel it toward policy change. We identify, inform, and motivate people who care about education to advocate for excellent public education systems. We work with other national organizations and our emerging state EVI network to build public demand for policies that will:

Close the opportunity gap by eliminating educational inequities within and across schools, neighborhoods, districts, and states.

Encourage innovation and creativity to address the needs of every child.

Invest in quality teachers, reducing turnover and increasing student success.

Guarantee universal access to education from pre-K through postsecondary school.

EVI believes that every child has a right to an excellent education, with no exceptions. EVI envisions a nation in which Americans call upon their local, state, and federal officials to make that vision a reality.

We work to support education reform from early childhood through higher education. We believe in setting high standards, encouraging innovation, recruiting and empowering great school leaders, developing and supporting great teachers, requiring accountability for elected officials and school leaders, and establishing a fair and transparent funding system.
