EVI bridges the gap between research and systemic change through advocacy and public engagement.

Strategic participation in democratic processes is the key to transforming education policies. We believe that by engaging the public in a discussion of what comprises a high-quality education and then promoting the policies necessary to enable our public school system to provide that high-quality education for all children, we can fundamentally change public education in America. All public officials claim to be pro-public education, but most people have difficulty defining the elements that ensure quality education and evaluating whether or not their public officials are making decisions that will result in an effective education system for all children. Education Voters Institute will work with distinguished academics, practitioners, policy makers, think tanks, educators, and voters to identify the most critical elements for making public schools work. Based on that research, EVI will work state by state, year by year, to ensure that voters and public officials have a common understanding of specific policies they can support, and specific actions they can take, to improve public education policy. The interactive sections of our website, and the state EVI affiliates, will ensure that our information is timely, relevant, and action-oriented.

EVI builds public demand for excellent education and channels it toward policy change, using civic participation and public information campaigns.

The Education Voters Institute envisions a nation in which every child graduates from high school prepared for college, civic engagement, and success in life, and in which every graduate has access to affordable higher education. We envision a rededication of public policy and public funds to the historic purpose of public education: preparing each student for engaged citizenship and lifelong learning. We envision Americans across the country engaged in common pursuit of that purpose. Our mission is to build public support for education policies that promote that vision. Through public information and civic participation campaigns, Education Voters Institute will create and increase voter demand for excellent education. We will organize a network of coordinated state EVIs that will conduct national, state and local initiatives.EVI will change public policies and redirect public funding toward accomplishment of five goals by the year 2012:

Bring excellent solutions to all schools, eliminating educational inequities within and across schools, neighborhoods, districts, and states.

Encourage innovation and creativity to address the needs of every child.

Invest in quality teachers, reducing turnover and increasing student success.

Invest in the full spectrum of education, from pre-K through postsecondary education.

Provide access to affordable higher education for all who seek it, preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s workplace.

Education is the key to individual accomplishment and democratic renewal. The goals we are pursuing will benefit individual students by improving access to quality education; equally important, they will benefit all Americans by preparing every individual for college, productive employment, and life in the 21st century.
